How to Solve Block Puzzle: Why You Lose at 3,000 Points and How to Get Past It
Block puzzle is the grid game where three shapes wait below the board and you drag them in. Nothing falls, nothing is timed, and you lose only when none of the three shapes fits anywhere. That makes it unusual: every single loss is a decision you made several moves earlier.
This guide covers the rules, then the specific board habits that decide whether you stall around three thousand points or keep going.

The rules
You are given three shapes at a time. Drag each onto the grid anywhere it fits. Shapes never rotate, and you cannot skip one.
Fill a full row or a full column and it clears. Clearing several at once scores more, and consecutive clears build a combo multiplier.
New shapes only arrive when all three current shapes are placed. The game ends when none of the remaining shapes can fit.
The mistake that ends most runs
Beginners place each shape wherever it fits most snugly, which fragments the board into isolated one- and two-cell gaps. Those gaps are unreachable for every shape except the single square, and the single square does not come often enough to bail you out.
The board does not punish this immediately. It punishes it ten moves later, when a 3×3 block appears and there is no 3×3 space left anywhere. By then the run is already lost—you simply have not been told yet.
What a healthy board looks like
- Keep one open 3×3 region at all times. The largest shape in the set needs it, and reserving space for the worst case is cheaper than recovering from it.
- Build from the edges inward. Placing against a wall leaves contiguous space in the middle; placing in the middle leaves two smaller regions on either side.
- Treat single empty cells as damage. If a placement creates an isolated hole, look for another placement first—almost always one exists.
- Do not chase combos at the cost of shape. A combo is worth points once; a fragmented board costs you the rest of the run.
Order matters more than placement
You get three shapes and choose the order. Place the most awkward one first, while you still have the most space to accommodate it. Saving the big L-shape for last is how boards deadlock.
Before placing anything, check whether all three can fit given your plan. If placing the small one first makes the big one homeless, reverse the order—this single check prevents most avoidable losses.

Frequently asked
Can you rotate the pieces in block puzzle?
No. Shapes are placed as shown, which is exactly why placement order matters so much—you cannot fix a bad fit by turning the piece.
Is block puzzle free?
Cozy Blocks is free to play here in the browser, with no download, no account, and no ads between runs.
How do you get a high score?
Clear multiple lines in one placement and keep clears consecutive to build the multiplier—but only when it does not fragment the board. Board shape beats greedy scoring over a full run.
Why did the game end when I still had empty squares?
The game ends when none of your three shapes fits, not when the board is full. Scattered single cells count as empty but are useless to most shapes.
