How to Beat Snake: The Cycle Method, and Why You Keep Trapping Yourself

Snake is trivial for the first thirty seconds and then becomes a routing problem. You never die to the food or the walls—you die because your own tail cut off the only way out of a region you had already entered.

This guide covers the rules, the mistake that causes almost every death, and the two routing methods that let a long snake keep going.

The rules

You control a snake that moves continuously and cannot stop or reverse into itself. Eat food to grow one segment; hitting a wall or your own body ends the run.

Speed increases as you grow in most versions, which shortens your reaction window exactly when the board is most crowded—the difficulty curve is built into the win condition.

Why you actually die

Almost every death is the same shape: you chase a piece of food into an area, and by the time you get there your tail has sealed the exit. The board still looks mostly empty, so it feels unlucky. It was not.

The rule to internalize: before entering any region, check that you can leave it. A pocket with one entrance is a trap the moment your length exceeds the space inside it.

Method 1 — hug the edges, eat from the outside in

  1. Travel along walls when you are not actively collecting. The perimeter is the one route that never creates a pocket behind you.
  2. Approach food from the side that leaves you an exit. Coming at it head-on into a corner is how short runs end.
  3. After eating, return to the perimeter rather than cutting across the middle. Crossing the centre splits the free space in two, and the smaller half becomes a trap.
  4. Never make two turns in the same direction in quick succession near your own body—that is the geometry of sealing yourself in.

Method 2 — the boustrophedon cycle (for long snakes)

Once you are long enough that free space is scarce, switch from chasing to sweeping. Run the board in a serpentine pattern—across one row, down, back across the next—so your body traces a path that always leaves a corridor behind it.

It is slower per piece of food, but it is the pattern that cannot trap you: a snake following a full cycle of the board can, in principle, never dead-end. Most very high scores are some approximation of this.

The practical version is to sweep most of the time and break the pattern only when food appears directly on your route.

Reading the board mid-run

Watch the free space, not the snake. If the open area is splitting into two regions, get to the larger one before it closes—being in the small half with a long body is a slow-motion loss.

When food spawns somewhere awkward, it is often correct to ignore it for a lap. Nothing forces you to collect immediately, and one wasted lap costs less than a trapped run.

About our version

Cozy Snake is free in the browser on phone and desktop, with no install and no account. Swipe or arrow keys both work, and inputs are queued—so a fast double turn registers as two turns rather than eating one of them, which is where a lot of unfair-feeling deaths come from elsewhere.

Three speeds are available, plus an optional wrap-around mode where the walls are open. There is no timer, no lives, no ad between runs, and your best score stays on your device.

Frequently asked

How do you play snake?

Steer a continuously moving snake with swipes or arrow keys, eat food to grow, and avoid hitting walls or your own body. You cannot stop or reverse directly into yourself.

How do you beat snake / get a high score?

Stop chasing food and start routing. Travel the perimeter while not collecting, approach food from a side that leaves an exit, and once you are long, sweep the board in a serpentine pattern rather than cutting across it.

Why do I keep dying when the board looks empty?

Because your tail sealed the region you entered. Free space that splits into two areas is the warning sign—get into the larger one before it closes.

Can I play the snake game free without downloading?

Yes—it runs in the browser on mobile and desktop, with no install and no account.
