Spot the Difference: What It Is, and the Scan Pattern That Finds the Last One
Spot the difference—also called find the difference—shows you two versions of the same picture with a fixed number of changes between them. Tap each change to score it. Simple, and reliably infuriating at the end, when four are found and the fifth refuses to appear.
The last one is hard for a reason that has nothing to do with how well you see. This guide explains why, and gives you a scan pattern that beats staring.

What the game is
You get two images side by side or stacked, depending on your screen. A set number of details differ: something added, removed, recolored, resized, or moved.
Tapping a difference marks it on both images. Tapping empty space is usually penalized lightly—in our version with a short cooldown rather than a lost life, so the game never punishes an honest guess into a loss.
Why the last one hides
Your eyes do not sweep a picture smoothly. They jump between points of interest—faces, edges, bright colors, text—and skip the low-contrast middle. Designers of these puzzles know it, so the final difference is usually placed in exactly the region your gaze keeps hopping over.
It is also why re-staring rarely works. Looking again the same way sends your eyes to the same places. You need a different route through the image, not more effort.
The scan pattern
- Split each image into a mental 3×3 grid and compare one cell against its twin before moving on. Finish a cell even when it looks identical—that discipline is the whole method.
- Sweep the borders first. Changes at the edge of the frame are the most commonly missed, because your attention is drawn toward the centre.
- Compare shapes, then colors, then counts. Counting is the one people skip: three windows in one image, four in the other, is a difference that never looks 'wrong' at a glance.
- Check things that repeat—buttons, tiles, leaves, spots. A repeated pattern with one member altered reads as normal texture until you count it.
- If you are down to one and stuck, flip your route: scan right-to-left and bottom-to-top. A new path breaks the fixation.
Two habits worth dropping
Do not zoom immediately. Zooming narrows the field so much that you can pass over the difference entirely while feeling thorough. Scan at full view first, zoom only to confirm.
Do not use hints on the fourth of five. The last one is the one you cannot get; save the hint for it rather than spending it on a difference you would have found in ten seconds.
About our version
Cozy Spot is free in the browser on phone and desktop, with no install and no account. Scenes are original artwork drawn for the game, not stock photos with filters applied.
Mis-taps cost a brief cooldown rather than a life, so the game stays calm. Hints are limited but never gated behind an ad or a purchase, and there is no timer unless you choose a timed round.
Frequently asked
What is spot the difference?
A puzzle showing two near-identical pictures with a fixed number of changes between them—added, removed, recolored, resized or moved details. You tap each change to find them all.
Why can't I find the last difference?
Your eyes jump between points of interest and skip low-contrast areas, and the final difference is usually hidden there. Change your scan route—grid by grid, or right-to-left—rather than staring harder.
Is there a trick to finding differences faster?
Compare a 3×3 grid cell by cell, sweep the borders first, and count repeated objects. Counting catches the differences that never look wrong at a glance.
Is it free with no download?
Yes—free in your browser on mobile and desktop, no install and no account needed.
